Why do R22 refrigerant systems have to be replaced?

R22 refrigerant is a coolant used in some older air conditioning systems. EU legislation was introduced in 2015 which banned the use of the R22 coolant to top up existing systems. In addition, in an effort to further improve the safety of R22 systems, the 2015 legislation also means that it is illegal to break into or replace the pipework in these systems.
